Is it coercive control? / THR / THR-4
THR-4
Intimidation through displays of force, property destruction, or implied presence
Definition
Non-verbal or indirect actions that communicate the capacity and willingness to cause harm without an explicit verbal threat.
How it operates
Destruction of property, punching walls or doors, displaying weapons, looming physical presence.
Function
Maintain fear through demonstration rather than statement.
Harm
The collapse of any sense of safe space and the continuous calculation of risk.
Why this is coercive control
Accidental property damage or coincidental encounters that context clearly frames as non-intimidating. The conduct here maintains fear through demonstration rather than statement.
Constructed example
“Would be a shame if this gun went off by accident," or menacingly, "Oops, looks like I broke all your makeup.”
Fictitious. Written to illustrate the behavior. Not a case.

Identifying a behavior described here does not establish a pattern of behavior and does not establish coercive control. A tactic is not a regime. The instrument consolidates peer-reviewed literature so a reader can check when in doubt. The instrument is not a coding manual. Carlton Research does not provide the instrument as a weapon.
