SUR-1

Demanding accounting of whereabouts, time, and activities

Definition

Interrogation about location, companions, schedule, or activities that goes beyond ordinary coordination and carries an accusatory or entitlement frame.

How it operates

Demands for real-time location, photos as proof of place, minute-by-minute accounting of time, and questions framed as entitlement rather than logistics.

Function

Establish the abuser's right to know the target's movements and punish deviations from expected patterns.

Harm

The conversion of ordinary life into a reportable regime; the target learns that independent movement requires explanation and risks consequences.

Why this is coercive control

Ordinary logistical questions about shared schedules or childcare arrangements that lack an interrogative or punitive pattern. The conduct here establishes the abuser's right to know the target's movements and punish deviations from expected patterns.

Constructed example

Fictitious. Written to illustrate the behavior. Not a case.

A statute that names a tactic is not a finding that the tactic is present.

Identifying a behavior described here does not establish a pattern of behavior and does not establish coercive control. A tactic is not a regime. The instrument consolidates peer-reviewed literature so a reader can check when in doubt. The instrument is not a coding manual. Carlton Research does not provide the instrument as a weapon.
