RES-7

Attachment Binding and Intermittent-reward Responses

Definition

Remaining oriented to the relationship, hoping for the return of warmth, or experiencing the bond as compulsive after a pattern of cruelty alternating with care.

How it operates

Statements of love or hope immediately after degradation or threat. Describing the relationship as addictive. Difficulty discarding the good periods as data. Staying through reconciliation cycles that reset the clock on leaving.

Function

Remain oriented to the relationship, hope for the return of warmth, or experience the bond as compulsive after cruelty has been paired with care.

Harm

Confusion, delayed naming of the pattern, and self-reproach for still caring.

Why this is coercive control

Attachment in a non-abusive relationship, or a single repair after a non-patterned conflict, is not this conduct. Intermittent reward binds the target without physical locks and delays naming of the pattern.

Constructed example

“After he said those things he was the man I met. I keep waiting for that version to stay.”

Fictitious. Written to illustrate the behavior. Not a case.
